The short answer
Answer four questions, then go to Home. Your NI number and HMRC connection can wait until you are ready to connect.
1. Choose what you do
Choose I work for myself, I rent out property or Both. There is no company option or question about where properties are. HMRC supplies your property businesses when you connect.
Start setup2. Answer the sign-up question
Choose Yes, I am signed up, No, not yet or I am not sure. No income or threshold is requested. Use Check on GOV.UK if you need help. I am not sure stays a separate answer. Your real HMRC obligations replace your answer once connected. You can use Change your sign-up answer on Home to change an answer before connecting.
Check on GOV.UK3. Choose how to add bank payments
Choose Connect a bank (Open Banking) to open the existing bank connection controls, or I will add things myself for now. Review and accept the AIS terms before authorising a connection. After returning, continue setup from where you left it.
Continue setup4. Choose how to add receipts
Choose WhatsApp, Email forwarding or Just the app. Your configured number and forwarding address appear here and on Home. These choices do not link a phone by themselves. Choose Go to Home to finish. Connect HMRC in Next up when ready. Start with SimpleTaxFlow: £1 + VAT/month for 6 months, then £5 + VAT/month.
