Import your spreadsheet figures for a quarterly update

Send an MTD quarterly update from your spreadsheet. Upload a CSV of your tax year so far, check the figures and carry on in Money.

Your tax year so far

The file holds totals from the start of your tax year to the date you choose.

Replace, never add

Uploading again replaces your last upload for that business and tax year.

Check before sending

See Income, Expenses and Profit exactly as HMRC will receive them.

01

The short answer

Save your spreadsheet as a CSV file with your totals for the tax year so far, then upload it in your quarterly update in Tax. SimpleTaxFlow shows the figures HMRC will receive before you send them. A self-employment CSV in GoFile’s layout imports unchanged, and there is a template for self-employment and UK property.

What you need

You need HMRC connected, a self-employment or UK property business, and your spreadsheet. If you are new to the template, start with our guide to filling in the MTD spreadsheet template. Our list of spreadsheet template lines explains every line the file accepts.

03

1. Open your update in Tax

Open Tax and choose Check update on the quarter you want to send. HMRC supplies the update dates, including a 1 April start for calendar update periods. If the page says Load your HMRC update periods, choose Sync now and open the update again.

2. Answer the turnover question

In Check your figures, under Expenses, choose No, use Simple or Yes, use Detailed. You answer once for each business and tax year, and the upload is refused until you do. If recorded turnover has already reached £90,000 this tax year or last, the page shows Use Detailed for this business instead. A forecast alone never carries forward to the next year.

3. Download the template and save your spreadsheet as CSV

In Add your figures, choose Download the template. Put the line name in column A and the amount in pounds in column B. Enter totals for the tax year so far. Total Expenses means allowable expenses, leaving out Business Entertainment, Depreciation and Residential Finance Costs. Residential Finance Costs have their own property line. Self-employment also accepts Other Income and Tax Taken Off Trading Income. CIS deductions are recorded separately. Leave unused lines blank or zero. Put amounts with a thousands comma in quotes, or leave out the comma.

4. Upload spreadsheet

Set Figures up to the last date your file covers, then choose Upload spreadsheet and select the file. It imports straight away and Check your figures refreshes, with changed lines highlighted. The file must be under 100 KB. Business Entertainment and Depreciation are not imported, because they cannot be claimed. CSV upload is for UK property you own on your own. Use Money for jointly owned property.

5. Add later records in Money

Your figures up to date can be earlier than the end of the quarter. Choose Add income and expenses instead to record the later days in Money. Money starts the day after Figures up to. Records dated inside the spreadsheet dates are refused.

6. Check and send

Check Income, Expenses and Profit. Residential Finance Costs and Tax Taken Off Trading Income are sent separately and do not add to the Expenses or Income totals. In Checks, Annual allowances shows the latest record for this business. Choose Manage to view or change it. It does not hold back your quarterly update. Tick both declarations and choose the Submit button, for example Submit Q1 update, to send it. After HMRC accepts it, Figures SimpleTaxFlow sent shows the exact fields and the date and time. If a warning says the local receipt was not saved, keep these figures and contact us so we can restore the record. The separate HMRC has on file card shows what HMRC currently holds, including updates from other software.

7. Correct a spreadsheet

Correct the spreadsheet and upload it again. Imported lines cannot be edited in Money. A replacement with the same Figures up to date keeps your later Money records. A later date is refused if it overlaps records already in Money. If recorded turnover means Detailed now applies, the page explains why. Replace Total Expenses with the expense categories at the same date, and give any uncategorised Money records a category.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload a CSV I already use with other bridging software?

A self-employment CSV in GoFile’s layout imports unchanged. Lines with zero amounts can stay in the file. Other layouts need the line names from our template in column A.

What if my spreadsheet only covers part of the quarter?

Set Figures up to the last date in your file. Then add the rest of the quarter in Money. Money starts the day after that date.

How do I correct figures I uploaded?

Fix the spreadsheet and upload it again. It replaces your last upload for that business and tax year. Imported lines cannot be edited in Money.
