Simple or detailed expenses for MTD

If your turnover is under £90,000 you can send one total for your expenses. At £90,000 or more, HMRC needs your expenses split into categories.

No card required until you are ready to submit to HMRC.

Who it is for

Every sole trader and landlord. You answer one question for each business and tax year.

What it does

  • Simple: one total for your expenses when turnover is under £90,000.
  • Detailed: expenses split into HMRC categories at £90,000 or more.
  • Once recorded turnover reaches £90,000, Detailed applies for that year and the next.
  • Residential finance costs for property always stay separate.

How it works

  1. Answer the turnover question

In your quarterly update, answer whether turnover is £90,000 or more.

  2. Use the matching layout

Simple needs one expenses total. Detailed needs each category.

  3. Check and send

We tell you if your recorded turnover means Detailed now applies.

Example: Sam, a self-employed decorator (fictional)
Expected turnover
£48,000
Route
Simple
Expenses sent
One total

Sam is under £90,000, so one expenses total is enough.
